Vomiting and diarrhoea in dogs: Common causes and what to do
It’s common for dogs to experience vomiting and/or diarrhoea at least once in their lives. While some causes are harmless, others require attention. It's important to remember that persistent vomiting or diarrhoea is never a good sign, and often needs veterinary intervention.
Common reasons for vomiting and diarrhoea
Your dog ate something they shouldn't have, and their body is trying to expel it.
They've caught a bug, similar to a human stomach upset.
An intestinal parasite may have taken hold.
They might have ingested something poisonous.
A side effect from medication.
Their tummy is reacting to a sudden change in food.
They're feeling stressed. Learn more about stress in dogs here.
Treating vomiting and diarrhoea
If an adult dog experiences vomiting and diarrhoea, the priority is to let their digestive system recover, offering supportive care if needed. If your dog seems otherwise well – bright and happy apart from the occasional upset – you can often manage it at home with a bland diet.
Puppies with vomiting and diarrhoea
However, puppies are much more vulnerable than adult dogs. They can become seriously unwell very quickly if they become dehydrated or their blood sugar drops. If your puppy is vomiting or has diarrhoea, please seek veterinary advice without delay. If your puppy is clearly unwell, get to the vet immediately!
