Skin Infections in Dogs: Causes and Treatments

Did you know that skin is your dog's largest organ? Healthy skin should be free of dandruff, crusts, redness, and sores, while remaining elastic. A healthy dog’s coat should be shiny and dense, smelling fresh and neutral. If this isn’t the case for your dog’s skin or coat, it might indicate a skin problem. It’s not uncommon for dogs to suffer from various skin issues.

Skin infections, sometimes caused by bacteria and yeast, are one type of skin problem dogs can experience. When a dog has a skin infection, it often means their skin’s natural defences are weakened. This can happen if, for example, a small wound on their body is repeatedly licked or scratched open.

Another factor that weakens the skin's natural defences is allergies. Allergies can also lead to excessive licking, which in turn increases the risk of a skin area becoming infected. Dogs can have two types of allergies: food allergies or atopy, meaning they're allergic to something in their environment. Find out more here.

Skin infections can vary in appearance and often indicate the underlying cause. You might see spots or pimple-like bumps, or the infected area might be sore and weeping. Sometimes, the skin can become covered in crusts. To determine the exact cause, a vet will usually need to examine the infected or irritated skin. Once identified, they can recommend the appropriate treatment.

If your dog has skin problems and you're unsure how best to care for them, we recommend consulting a digital vet. As a Lassie insurance customer, you have unlimited access to this service.
