Which dog breed is right for you and your lifestyle?

Choosing the right dog breed is crucial for a happy life together. Not sure which breed suits you and your family? Here, we give you an overview of some popular dog breeds.

Golden retriever
A typical Golden Retriever is docile, outgoing, and intelligent, with an innate ability to work and a love of retrieving. They are typically friendly, trusting, and confident. Goldens mature relatively late, both physically and mentally. They are social dogs that love to spend time with their family.

Labrador retriever
A Labrador should be social, cheerful, and kind, as well as friendly and spontaneous when interacting with other dogs and people. They are intelligent and docile with a strong desire to please, and make adaptable and affectionate companions. They love to carry things. Labradors need plenty of exercise, but above all, they need to be kept busy and given meaningful tasks.

Cocker Spaniel
The Cocker Spaniel requires a firmer hand than its sweet appearance might suggest. Their origins as a group hunting dog mean they usually thrive in packs and get on well with other dogs. This breed should be positive, curious, and open-minded. They are playful, friendly, lively, and can sometimes be headstrong. They have a great need for closeness and physical contact. They also excel in dog sports beyond hunting, such as obedience, agility, and scent work.

Jack Russell TerrierThis breed packs a lot of courage and self-confidence into a small, cute package. They are very social and sociable. Originally bred for hunting vermin, it’s easy to see why the Jack Russell is still so positive, independent, and brave today.

Pug
The Pug is a small dog with a big personality and plenty of curiosity, plus a great sense of humour. They are natural comedians, happy to bask in everyone's attention. They are cheerful and loyal companions, getting along very well with other dogs. They are uncomplicated dogs.

PoodleThe Poodle is cheerful, positive, friendly, social, humorous, lively, and energetic, as well as being easy to train and obedient. They are playful and quick-witted. They can learn to manipulate their owner if not watched carefully! They are more of a family dog than a one-person dog and get on well with other animals. They should never be aggressive or suspicious. Poodles are not a breed that can be left alone much, as they are too dependent on people.

Chihuahua
The Chihuahua is a dog with a strong pack and owner instinct. They will loudly defend their pack and territory against intruders, but once the danger has passed, they'll happily climb onto the intruder's lap for a cuddle. They are active dogs, happy to join in all sorts of activities, from agility and long walks to Friday evening snuggles on the sofa. Like all dogs, they benefit from firm training and regular exercise. This breed should not be patronised or overly indulged just because they are small.
