How to teach your puppy its name

When you bring your new puppy home, it won't understand a word of human language. It's fascinating how quickly dogs learn to communicate with us, though! Research shows that dogs can learn a variety of words and even longer phrases.

Teaching your puppy its name

It’s a good idea to teach your puppy its name as early as possible. There are several tricks to help your puppy learn its name and to start paying attention when you call. Here are some ways to get started.

Learning through play

Choose a time when your puppy is alert and energetic. Cheerfully call its name to get its attention for a game. After playing for a while, let your puppy rest or do something else. Then, call its name again and have another happy play session.

Reinforce with treats

This exercise involves pairing the puppy's name with a tasty treat. Start by sitting on the floor near your puppy. When the puppy comes to you on its own, say its name in a happy tone and immediately give it a treat. Repeat this exercise regularly.

During mealtimes

When it's time for food, you can use your puppy's name to call it over. This is a great way to associate its name with positive feelings and experiences several times a day.

Things to consider

For now, just stick to one name. You can introduce nicknames later once your puppy reliably knows its main name. Try your best not to use your puppy's name when you're telling it off or when it's doing something it shouldn't. It's easy for the name to slip out, but it’s best to keep its name linked only to positive experiences.
