When to see a vet about vomiting and diarrhoea in your dog

Vomiting and diarrhoea in dogs is relatively common, and it can be caused by many different things! In some cases it can be treated at home with a bland diet, but in some cases it's important to take your dog to a vet for an examination.

When it's time to seek treatment for vomiting and diarrhoea

If your dog has vomiting and/or diarrhoea while exhibiting any of the following symptoms, you should see a vet immediately:

  • The dog has blood in the stool or vomiting. Except for small streaks of bright blood in the diarrhea of an otherwise healthy dog

  • The dog has frequent vomiting where it cannot retain food or water

  • The dog has an impaired general condition

  • The dog has a loss of thirst and appetite

  • the dog shows signs of pain

  • The dog has a fever

  • You suspect poisoning

  • You suspect dehydration

  • Symptoms have not resolved despite a bland diet and probiotics

If you have a dog with vomiting and/or diarrhoea that does not show any of the above symptoms while having an unaffected general condition, you can try treating the dog at home with a spongy diet.

If your dog has recurring symptoms from the gastrointestinal tract that come in relapses, you should have your dog examined by a veterinarian. In some cases, it can be difficult to know whether your dog needs the help of a vet or not, and it is very easy to become concerned about your dog having vomiting and/or diarrhoea. Therefore, do not hesitate to call and consult a vet if you are worried and do not know how to take care of your dog or if you are unsure whether your dog needs care.
