Dog vaccination schedule

Primary vaccinations


From 8 weeks (First primary vaccination)

This is the first of three primary vaccinations, usually given by the breeder. It protects your dog against:

  • Parvovirus (Canine Parvovirus P)

  • Distemper (D)

  • Hepatitis (H) – Adenovirus (A)

  • Leptospirosis (L) (can be given at 12 weeks instead)

  • Parainfluenza (Pi) and Bordetella bronchiseptica (Bb): the two components of kennel cough

From 12 weeks (Second primary vaccination)

This is the second of three primary vaccinations. It protects your dog against:

  • Parvovirus (Canine Parvovirus P)

  • Distemper (D)

  • Hepatitis (H) – Adenovirus (A)

  • Leptospirosis (L)

  • Parainfluenza (Pi) and Bordetella bronchiseptica (Bb): the two components of kennel cough

  • Rabies (R) (first vaccination from 12 weeks)

From 16 weeks (Third primary vaccination)

This is the third of the three primary vaccines, protecting your dog against:

  • Parvovirus (Canine Parvovirus P)

  • Distemper (D)

  • Hepatitis (H) – Adenovirus (A)

  • Leptospirosis (L) (needed if not given at 8 or 12 weeks; optional if puppy had both)

  • Parainfluenza (Pi) and Bordetella bronchiseptica (Bb): the two components of kennel cough

  • Rabies (R) (first vaccination from 12 weeks)

6 months to 1 year old (Primary vaccination booster)

  • Parvovirus (Canine Parvovirus P)

  • Distemper (D)

  • Hepatitis (H) – Adenovirus (A)

  • Leptospirosis (L)

  • Parainfluenza (Pi) and Bordetella bronchiseptica (Bb): the two components of kennel cough

  • Rabies (R) (booster may be needed within 1 year of the primary vaccination, depending on vaccine)

Annual vaccinations

Once your dog has completed their primary vaccinations by age one, the following boosters apply:

Annual boosters

  • Leptospirosis (L) (may be needed every 6 months for high-risk dogs, e.g. hunting dogs, those in damp areas, or areas with rats)

  • Parainfluenza (Pi) and Bordetella bronchiseptica (Bb): the two components of kennel cough

  • Rabies (R) (booster may be needed annually, depending on vaccine)


Boosters every 2-3 years

  • Parvovirus (Canine Parvovirus P)

  • Distemper (D)

  • Hepatitis (H) – Adenovirus (A)

  • Rabies (R) (booster may be needed every 2-3 years, depending on vaccine)
