Occasional vomiting in cats

A cat vomiting now and then isn't necessarily a sign of something dangerous or serious, it can actually be perfectly normal for them! This might be because they need to bring up hairballs.

There are of course many reasons why a cat may vomit from time to time. Hairballs are one example. Cats are meticulous groomers, meaning they swallow a lot of fur, which can then form hairballs in their stomach. Cats can't digest hair, so it's either passed in their faeces or brought back up as hairballs. Despite the name, they aren't actually round but are usually cylindrical.

Another reason cats sometimes vomit is if they've eaten something unsuitable, such as spoiled food or a substance they're sensitive to.

However, if a cat vomits several times a week, or if the vomiting becomes more frequent over time, it could be a sign they're unwell. It's not normal for a cat to vomit this often! Frequent vomiting can be caused by many things, not just stomach issues. It can also be a symptom of kidney disease, pancreatitis, thyroid problems, tumours, or food allergies.

Always take vomiting in your cat seriously. If your cat vomits frequently, or more than you'd consider normal, please contact a vet for a check-up!
