Cats and harness

If you don't have the opportunity to let your cat loose outdoors, but still want it to experience nature and get more exercise, it's a good idea to take it out in a harness. However, not all cats are receptive to this type of exercise, but you can always try! This activity requires some patience and practice, but is worth the effort if your cat enjoys it.

Make sure you buy a harness that fits around your cat's neck and body. If you're not sure what size your cat needs, you can get help from a pet shop.

Here's how to get your cat used to going outside in a harness

• First, you need to get your cat used to wearing a harness indoors. It doesn't have to be a long time that you practice this at a time, especially if he's not used to it. Try to stimulate your cat with a toy or treat at the same time, so you distract and associate the harness with a fun activity. Repeat this once a day until your cat has got used to it and doesn't find the harness unpleasant or try to get it off.

• The next step is to go for a short walk outside! Think about where you're going beforehand so you know you won't bump into dogs or too many people - this can make your cat very nervous, especially in an environment that's new to them. The first time, your cat probably won't want to go very far at all, which is perfectly normal. You'll probably have to take it out several times until it starts to relax and wants to explore outside. It will take some patience, and it's important that you reward your cat with lots of praise and cuddles every time you go out.
  

• Your cat will need time to get used to the leash even outdoors - make sure you don't pull or tug on the leash, but keep it slack so your cat doesn't feel pressured to go any direction.
