Bringing your kitten home
Bringing a kitten home is an exciting and heartwarming experience — but there are a few important things to consider to ensure a safe and smooth start together.
Minimum Age: 12 Weeks
In many countries, it's recommended or even legally required that kittens stay with their mother until at least 12 weeks of age. This is crucial for their social development and health. Always confirm the kitten’s date of birth with the breeder or shelter.
Documents You Should Receive
Make sure to get the following:
Sales contract – with details about you, the seller, and the kitten (including age, breed, and price).
Vaccination record – the kitten should have received at least the first round of core vaccinations.
ID and microchip info – if the kitten is microchipped, get the chip number and details on how to register yourself as the owner.
Pedigree papers – if you’re buying a purebred kitten.
Health certificate – especially if coming from a breeder, to confirm the kitten is healthy at the time of adoption.
Other Useful Info to Ask About
What food is the kitten used to?
How often does it eat?
Is it litter trained?
Has it been socialized with people, kids, or other pets?
This will help you keep the transition as stress-free as possible.
Prepare Your Home
Before your kitten arrives, make sure you have:
Food and water bowls
Litter box and litter
Kitten-appropriate food
Scratching post
Cozy bed and toys
Also, create a safe, quiet space where your kitten can adjust during the first few days.
Don’t Forget Insurance
Vet bills can be expensive — even for young, healthy kittens. Consider getting pet insurance as soon as your kitten comes home, so you're protected from day one in case of illness or accident.
