How to calm your puppy
It’s completely normal for puppies to be a bit mischievous – it’s part of their development. It’s important to let your puppy burn off energy and give them opportunities to chew, explore, and dig. Sometimes, though, your puppy might get the "zoomies" or seem overtired and need some help to settle down. This is very common and usually passes as they grow older.
Why does my puppy bite?
Puppies often bite because their teeth are itchy or sore. Giving them something appropriate to chew on, like a dental chew, can help. In many cases, leaving your puppy to settle themselves or even calmly ignoring them will help them calm down.
How to soothe your puppy
You can try gently massaging your puppy’s chest and muzzle while they are between your legs. This takes patience, as not all puppies can sit still easily. Gently hold your puppy during the massage. When they stop struggling, reward them by letting them go. With practice, your puppy will learn that not struggling leads to freedom.
It’s common for puppies to get restless in the evening when they’re tired. They might need to release some pent-up energy, so a short play session can often help. It’s also beneficial for your puppy to have a designated quiet spot at home where they can relax. Gently take them to this spot, speak calmly, and stroke them softly. A chew toy can also help keep them occupied if they’re finding it hard to settle.
