Summer dangers for your cat
We asked for your summer-related questions on social media, and Lassie’s vet Sofie received many great ones! Here are some answers to your queries.
Increased temperatures
Can cats get heatstroke? How can you tell?
Yes, cats can get heatstroke. It can happen to pets exposed to high temperatures without the opportunity to seek shade and cool off, for example, in a hot car or if they're left in direct sunlight on a hot summer’s day. Heatstroke is life-threatening, so it’s important to be alert to the early signs of overheating. These can include heavy panting, drooling, seeking shade, and bright red mucous membranes in the mouth. Your pet might seem anxious or more lethargic than usual. If the condition worsens, they may start vomiting, have difficulty breathing, and faint.
The sun's rays
My cat loves sunbathing on the patio. Can she get sunburned or a rash?
Yes, cats can actually get sunburned, just like us, but it’s uncommon in our pets. Pets with thinner and/or light coats, and hairless breeds, are particularly vulnerable. The skin on their nose, ears, belly, and scrotum is thinner and therefore more susceptible. I'd say a cat without other skin issues can sunbathe as you describe without problems, but you can apply fragrance-free sunscreen to their ears, for example, if you notice their skin becoming red after sun exposure. There are also special sunscreens for dogs and cats that you can use on sensitive areas if you're planning longer activities with increased sun exposure.
Insect stings
Do I need to see a vet if my cat is stung by a wasp or bee?
A wasp or bee sting is rarely dangerous for your cat, so you don't usually need to seek veterinary care. There may be a small local swelling at the sting site, and your pet might be a little sore. Like humans, some animals can have an allergic reaction to an insect bite. If your pet becomes generally unwell or swells significantly, you should contact a vet. If they are stung around the face, mouth, or throat, you should also consult a vet, as severe swelling can affect their ability to breathe.
