When your puppy chews everything: what to do
Puppies explore the world with their mouths, which is why they bite and taste everything. Their mouths are like human hands – they use them to grab and hold things. It's perfectly normal for your puppy to bite or chew on everything around them at this age; they're simply curious about their surroundings!
Puppy-proofing your home is essential to prevent chewing accidents. Remove anything valuable or potentially dangerous for your puppy to chew or taste. Think about electrical cords, curtains, houseplants, rugs, and toys. Anything you don't want chewed should be safely out of reach.
Ensure your puppy has an exciting selection of toys. Rotate them regularly to keep them feeling new and engaging. For puppies who love to chew, offer appropriate chew toys or bones. Choose chews that are the right size and resistance for your puppy.
Chewing is a phase that will pass. Avoid distracting your puppy with extra-special toys or treats when they're chewing something. They might accidentally learn that chewing household items earns them fun games or rewards. Don't punish the behaviour either; raising your voice or grabbing their scruff can scare them. Anger won't teach them what they can or can't chew.
If your puppy does grab something unsuitable, stay calm. Slowly approach them, talking gently, and present a regular toy. When they become curious and let go of the item, praise them with a calm 'thank you' and give them the toy. This shows them what's okay to chew on. Make sure the toy you offer is always available, not a special treat.
