Cough in cats

Coughs can appear in cats of all ages. A cat's cough comes from the chest, just as it does for us humans. When coughing, cats often stick their heads out when they cough. Occasional coughing may be due to a blade of grass or similar object being caught in the throat. So it's nothing to worry about. But recurrent and persistent coughing should be checked by a vet.

Regular coughing

Regular coughing and coughing attacks in cats are not normal, but they are not diseases in themselves. They are a sign that your cat is suffering from another illness. The causes of the cough can be many here are some:

• Infection

• Asthma

• Allergic reaction

• Heart disease

• Parasites

• Cancer

This is why it is very important to take your cat to the vet if your cat's cough becomes prolonged. The underlying causes should be determined so that a veterinarian can institute the proper treatment. The vet will then carry out a clinical examination of your cat's whole body, which may also include x-rays of the head, neck and lungs, for example. A blood test may also be needed, as well as urine tests and other advanced investigations to find the cause.

It is therefore important that you seek treatment for your cat if the cough does not go away and become regular. If your cat also has general symptoms, you should not wait to visit the vet.
